She held on to the rumpled sheets
Even when last night seemed to be but a distant memory
There wasn’t even anything real to remind her of their bondage last night
Just memories—her own, alone, untouched
Untouched
How could that be when her skin still tingles from his touch?
Strange—how something that intense could so suddenly be but inkling
But still, she held on to the sheets
She leaned over to claim her box of cigarettes from the table
Reached inside the left back pocket of her stone washed jeans
Retrieved her lighter
“Damn”
Shook her head when she noticed the silver Zippo
“Samurai” was engraved on it
Now she remembers everything
His brown eyes, the sweet taste of his mouth, his toned body
His name, his Mini Cooper, his girlfriend
Every fucking thing
Oh, fucking, she remembers that part too
Why him?
“His girlfriend’s such a bitch”
But no, not really, it’s not that
For so long already she’d be his fallback
She’ll keep him company and let him just rant—
Rant about Olivia and how the woman drives him crazy
Oh, Olivia, that’s who he’d be with right now
She stands up to clean herself
Pretending the running water will flush away last night
And every other night he slept over
Nah, they barely slept at all
Even then he’d leave so early
Rushing to get Olivia’s favorite pastry
Never even bothering to buy the poor other girl coffee
She’ll get through this—a fact
She puts on her sunglasses and heads out her apartment
Banged the door close and mumbled hellos to nosy neighbors
She parked her Hybrid swiftly and strained to gather her stuff from the backseat
A familiar chuckle caused her to stir instinctively
Olivia frantically waved as he smiled lazily
She let out a toothy smile as she regained composure
Olivia stretched her arms out and enveloped her in a hug
He took her purse and folders and let the girls catch up
She smiled at him—pained yet genuine
This is how they are—how they always will be
She comes back home to rumpled sheets
Empty beer cans and scratched CDs
He goes back sober to his Olivia
They stay happy and together
She stays at home with rumpled sheets
She grabs a stick and lights it up
She reaches for his Zippo and thought aloud
I’ll keep you where nobody else can find you
